Coffee crop coefficient for precision irrigation based on leaf area index Bragantia
Pereira,Antonio Roberto; Camargo,Marcelo Bento Paes de; Villa Nova,Nilson Augusto.
Crop coefficient (Kc) for coffee plantations was found to be linearly related to the leaf area index (L) up to 3, i.e., Kc = b L. The basic assumption is that for irrigated trees the water use per unit leaf area (ET LA) is equal to the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) expressed also on a unit leaf area basis of the reference surface (ET LA = ETo/Lo). As recommended by FAO-56 the leaf area index (Lo) for the hypothetical reference surface (grass) is equal to 2.88, then the most likely value is b = Lo-1 = 2.88-1 = 0.347. However, for L > 3 (completely covered ground surface) Kc decreased from a peak value (~1.05) tending to an asymptotic low value around 0.7 for L > 6, but the linear model gives unrealistic Kc estimates; tentatively the...

Evapotranspiration, crop coefficient and water use efficiency of coriander grown in tropical environment Horticultura Brasileira
Silva,Vicente de PR da; Sousa,Inajá Francisco de; Tavares,Alexandra L; Silva,Thieres George F da; Silva,Bernardo B da; Holanda,Romildo M de; Brito,José Ivaldo B de; Braga,Célia C; Souza,Enio P de; Silva,Madson T.
ABSTRACT The water scarcity is expected to intensify in the future and irrigation becomes an essential component of crop production, especially in arid and semiarid regions, where the available water resources are limited. Four field experiments were carried out at tropical environment in Brazil in 2013 and 2014, in order to evaluate the effect of planting date on crop evapotranspiration (ETc), crop coefficient (Kc), growth parameters and water use efficiency (WUE) of coriander (Coriandrum sativum) plants. The planting dates occurred during winter, spring, summer and autumn growing seasons. ETc was obtained through the soil water balance method and the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) through the Penman-Monteith method, using data collected from an...

Hydrodynamic changes of the soil-cactus interface, effective actual evapotranspiration and its water efficiency under irrigation AGRIAMBI
Morais,José E. F. de; Silva,Thieres G. F. da; Queiroz,Maria G. de; Araújo,Gherman G. L. de; Moura,Magna S. B.; Araújo Júnior,George do N..
ABSTRACT The knowledge on soil water dynamics is the basis of crop water management. The soil water balance (SWB) method is used for this purpose. However, its application in cactus may lead to misinterpretation in water efficiency analysis, since it does not consider the amount of water retained in the plant (WRP). This study aimed to evaluate SWB applicability, hydrodynamic changes and water efficiency of forage cactus clones under irrigation. The clones ‘Orelha de Elefante Mexicana’ (OEM), ‘IPA Sertânia’ (IPA) and ‘Miúda’ (MIU) were submitted to irrigation depths (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 mm) and frequencies (7, 14 and 28 days), in Serra Talhada, PE, Brazil, between March 2012 and August 2013. The SWB was applied, by adding the WRP in the estimate of the...

MODELING YIELD, SOIL WATER BALANCE, AND ECONOMIC RETURN OF SOYBEAN UNDER DIFFERENT WATER DEFICIT LEVELS REA
Petry,Mirta T.; Basso,Laudenir J.; Carlesso,Reimar; Armoa,Maria S.; Henkes,Jonas R..
ABSTRACT Evaluating the impacts of water stress on crop yield allows comparing irrigation management alternatives, aiming to ensure an economic return for the irrigated farms. Thus, the main objectives of this study were to model the soil water balance, deriving the crop coefficients, grain yield prediction, and economic return of soybean grown at different levels of water deficit and price quotations. The experiment was carried out under a rainout shelter, using four irrigation water managements. Irrigations were applied when the soil available water in the root zone reached 75%, 64%, 60%, and 50% of the total available water (TAW). Crop and soil parameters were monitored throughout the crop season. The SIMDualKc model was used to simulate the soil water...

SIMANIHOT: A PROCESS-BASED MODEL FOR SIMULATING GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTIVITY OF CASSAVA REA
Tironi,Luana F.; Streck,Nereu A.; Gubiani,Paulo I.; Benedetti,Rômulo P.; Freitas,Charles P. de O. De.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to propose a model, named Simanihot, for simulating growth, development and yield of tuberous roots in cassava, with a choice of two soil water balance models. The model works on a day time step and is calibrated for five cassava cultivars (Fepagro –RS 14, Estrangeira, Cascuda, São José e Paraguaia), with different branching habits and different purpose of use (pasture, food and industry). The model has a graphical interface, where the user can choose one out of two soil water balance models, depending upon the number of known soil variables and details the user wants to know about soil water content.

Soil water storage variability in a three-dimensional analysis in the root zone of irrigated melon Bragantia
Nascimento,Francisco Airdesson Lima do; Silva,Alisson Jadavi Pereira da; Campos,Allan Radax Freitas.
ABSTRACT A detailed knowledge of the soil water storage variability in the root zone can promote recommendations regarding the ideal positioning of sensors, as well as make the calculation of soil water balance more precise and accurate. This study aimed to assess soil water storage variability in the melon root zone and indicate – based on spatial variation of soil water storage – the regions of highest rootactivity of the melon crop in different development stages. Soil waterstorage was measured using time domain reflectometry (TDR) in 40 monitoring points. The data were daily collected in two periods: (i) immediately before irrigation and (ii) 30 min after irrigation. The soil water storage variation in the melon root zone occurs with greater intensity...

Water extraction variability in the banana root zone affects the reliability of water balance Scientia Agricola
Silva,Alisson Jadavi Pereira da; Coelho,Eugênio Ferreira; Coelho Filho,Maurício Antônio.
Spatial and temporal variability of soil water extraction from the root zone affect soil water balance determination. The number of sensors installed in the root zone in studies addressing water balance is still set arbitrarily. This study provided an investigation of the water extraction process by banana (Musa spp.) roots by (i) determining the variability of water extraction from the banana tree root zone, (ii) detecting differences in the estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) by the soil water balance method when the number of soil profiles monitored in the roots zone varies, (iii) and; determining the minimum number of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) probes needed to obtain ET precision and accuracy similar to that determined by a drainage lysimeter....

Yield, water use efficiency, and yield response factor in carrot crop under different irrigation depths Ciência Rural
Carvalho,Daniel Fonseca de; Oliveira Neto,Dionizio Honório de; Felix,Luiz Fernando; Guerra,José Guilherme Marinho; Salvador,Conan Ayade.
ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different irrigation depths on the yield, water use efficiency (WUE), and yield response factor (Ky) of carrot (cv. 'Brasília') in the edaphoclimatic conditions of Baixada Fluminense, RJ, Brazil. Field trials were conducted in a Red-Yellow Argisol in the 2010-2011period. A randomized block design was used, with 5 treatments (depths) and 4 replicates. Depths were applied by drippers with different flow rates, and the irrigation was managed by time domain reflectometry (TDR) technique. The reference (ETo) and crop (ETc) evapotranspiration depths reached 286.3 and 264.1mm in 2010, and 336.0 and 329.9mm in 2011, respectively. The root yield varied from 30.4 to 68.9t ha-1 as a response to...
